想要制作一部天衣无缝的心理惊悚电影，就别想着可以讨巧走捷径。一般而言，这个过程都是先有故事点子，然后再经历一个长期、迂回的复杂制作，然后有人投资，导演、演员皆数到位，最终才能成形，《破绽》也不例外。影片的制片人查尔斯·威斯托克(Charles Weinstock)表示：“制作一部惊悚电影绝对是一个最折磨人、最艰苦的过程。当你拥有一个非常好的想法、想要将其带上大银幕的时候，你就会像我们一样，需要克服许多难以想象的障碍，因为你必须为这个故事点子设计一个最完美的结局，否则你的想法再超凡脱俗也是白搭，你应该和我们一样，不想制作一些轻率的汽车追逐，也不想在一座废弃的码头将人殴打致死……为了能够贯穿始终，我们一直在尽力构建一个与之相称的情节安排，告诉你一个屡试不爽的好办法：让故事中的角色尽可能真诚--他们迟早会带给你惊喜。”所以不难想象，《破绽》是经历了长久的“阵痛”，才横空出世的。安东尼·霍普金斯(Anthony Hopkins)饰演特德·克劳福德，他是专门研究断裂力学的工程师兼科学家，工作的性质是分析航空故障以及飞机事故，所以他非常自豪于自己能够找出任何体系中哪怕是最小化的过失与缺点。霍普金斯表示：“这是一个聪明、复杂、有着完美结构的剧本，在现在的好莱坞是不多见的，能够参与到其中饰演一个重要的角色，对于我来说是非常幸运的。”但是，千万别问安东尼·霍普金斯是否想借着这个角色重获“辉煌”，因为他很快就会用回答将你引至其他的地方：“我不是一个研究电影的学者，所以我从来不分析一部好电影应该具备什么样的因素。我永远不会去考虑一个角色的潜在意思，更不会去问编剧一些愚蠢的问题，例如为什么这些人会做这样的事……我只负责将其呈现出来。在我表演生涯中，真正饰演过两个罪犯，一个是汉尼拔，另一个就是特德，都是那种能够自我控制的心理畸形人。特德着迷于自己喜欢找瑕疵的天性，他喜欢愚弄别人，喜欢在道德的边缘如履薄冰，由于他太聪明了，所以他这辈子都没希望做一个真正的好人了。”！

　　美丽的妻子有了外遇，丈夫一般的表现都是羞耻、愤怒，错手杀人的案件更是时有发生，这在法律的官方术语中叫“情杀”。然而像特德·克劳福德表现得如此冷静的，却实属罕见，虽然他开枪打中了年轻美丽的妻子詹妮弗，但早已为以后免于牢狱之灾做好了充分的准备与思量。
　　跟着警察一起抵达谋杀现场的还有人质谈判专家罗布·纽奈利，他也是惟一一个被允许进入现场的非警察官员……让罗布非常吃惊的是，特德欣然地承认自己确实向妻子开了枪，而让他感到更不可思议的是，倒在血泊之中的女人竟然就是自己的情人--罗布并不知道詹妮弗是个有夫之妇。
　　很快，罗布就意识到詹妮弗的枪伤虽然严重，气若游丝，其实并没有死……特德即刻被捕，坦承了罪行之后，他准备接受法庭的传讯。年轻热心的检查官助理威利·比查姆对这个案子表现出了莫大的兴趣，其实他心里也在打着自己的小算盘，他希望这起看起来简单容易的案件可以在仕途方面帮助自己，因为他想离开刑事法庭，进入更加严密的经济法庭中。
　　然而，事情往往都是不尽如人意的，碰到了特德，也算是威利倒霉。由于刚刚把性感却野心十足的美丽律师追到手，威利急于表现自己，同时也感觉到了无比的压力，更是拼了命地想借着这个官司让自己来个名利双收。威利的急于求成全被特德看在眼里，他一步一步、有条不紊地将这个助理检查官拉进道德沦陷的漩涡之中。在智力与策略的紧张对决中，威利终于明白了一个事实：那就是看起来再完美的表相，只要你足够认真，都能找到其中的“破绽”，如何好好利用这个“破绽”，就成了能否成功的关键所在。
