英国特种空勤团（Special Air Service，简称SAS，中文又名空降特勤队）是英国陆军执行特种任务的主力部队，是世界上最杰出的部队。
特种空勤团的建立源于一位年轻英国中尉的创意，它的作战方式是军事史上的一场革命。
1941年，年仅25岁的英国斯特林上尉奉命在北非建立一支特种部队。当时的报纸这样介绍他们：特别空勤团（简称SAS）是英国军队的无名英雄。他们的口号是：“保密”！这支部队历史上战绩骄人。

二战期间，他们在纳粹非洲军团的后方进行暗杀、破袭和营救盟军战俘的行动，在1年半的时间里，成功地炸毁了德国空军的250架飞机和数十个弹药库。
战后，SAS开始被用于对付爱尔兰共和军或其他形形色色的恐怖活动：
1977年5月，协助荷兰海军陆战队和“骑警队”解救了1辆被恐怖分子劫持的荷兰列车；
同年10月，协助西德边防警察第9大队成功地救出被恐怖分子劫持到索马里摩加迪沙机场的德国汉萨航空公司的喷气客机及机中的87名人质。
而使SAS从幕后走到台前。成为世界瞩目焦点的还是1980年4月的反恐怖行动，当时5名伊朗武装人员占领了伊朗驻英国使馆，劫持了26名人质。两天后，SAS出动了24名队员，使用“昏眩”手榴弹，在40秒钟内闪电般地袭击了恐怖分子，成功地解救了19名人质。
1991年SAS又开赴海湾，与美国“三角洲”部队一同搜寻伊拉克的“飞毛腿”导弹，负责攻击伊拉克的导弹储藏机构和司令部与控制中心，并以手持激光指示器指示伊军重要目标，引导美空军轰炸。
在英国特种空勤团（SAS）的所有官兵左胸前都戴着一个银质翼形徽章，臂章上简洁明了地绣着“短剑、翅膀、盾牌”这3样独具SAS特色的东西。
短剑锋利无比，能精准刺入敌人的要害；
张开的翅膀表明了特种空勤团能随时快速部署到地球上任何需要的地方；
盾形臂章的下端，一条红边蓝底的绶带上绣着特种空勤团的信条：“勇者必胜”。
特种部队的生活可以用3个“W”来概括：工作、工作、等待（work,workandwaiting）。
英国一名国防部军事顾问就曾说道：“他们（SAS）就是为最困难的任务而生的战士！”
直到今天，这支被称为“英国皇家禁卫军”的第22特种空勤团仍笼罩着一圈神秘光晕，英国国防部一度拒绝公开提及它的存在。
据悉，该团包括4个各由50人组成的空军大队。其中一个一直在英国本土处于机动状态，时刻准备采取反恐行动。
由于任务很危险，特种空勤团是英国军队中唯一有权选择装备的部队。据防务专家披露，特种空勤团装备有一张令人畏惧的“王牌”——这是一种号称所谓“三合一”的武器——同时具有手提式机关枪的火力（每分钟可发射960发子弹）、中射程冲锋枪的威力和手枪的易CAO作性。它使用的子弹可以穿透20层的凯夫拉防弹衣。
此外，特种空勤团的士兵还装备有“米兰”式反坦克导弹发射装置和M82A1“巴雷特”狙击步枪，并且可以使用一种新式越野式高机动卡车。它可以装载3吨重的物资器械（如卫星通讯装置和备用零件），搭载着特种空勤团的士兵纵横驰骋。
